National Electric Code and Abandoned Cable

National Electric Code

Certain sections of the 2002 and 2005 NEC, sections 770 and 800, address cabling and circuits related to the delivery of voice, data, video and other types of services in buildings. The most common cabling type, copper cable, is primarily used for telecommunications services.

Article 770 and Article 800 of the 2002 and 2005 NEC state that abandoned cables shall not be permitted to remain in ducts, plenums or other horizontal and vertical riser and air handling spaces.

Section 800.2 defines abandoned communications cable as “installed communications cable that is not terminated at both ends at a connector or other equipment and not identified for future use with a tag.”

Section 800.52(B) states that “the accessible portion of abandoned communications cables shall not be permitted to remain.”

Section 800.52(1) states that abandoned cables in vertical runs shall not be permitted to remain.

Article 770 contains the same requirements for optical fiber risers and horizontal cables.
