Abandoned Cable Removal Rationale
Abandoned cable that exists in the risers and other areas of your buildings is a life safety and environmental issue that must be addressed. While the initial focus related to NEC is on fire loading, the focus is certain to move onto the environmental issues associated with the installation and removal of communications cabling.
From a life safety point, abandoned cabling serves as an additional fuel source for fire, smoke and toxic fumes that can incapacitate building occupants and hinder life safety personnel in the event of a fire. Removing abandoned cable reduces unnecessary fire load in your buildings.
From an environmental point, PVC (polyvinyl chloride) cabling is probably the worst of the three cabling types that are used in buildings. PVC cables emit hydrogen chloride, dioxins and other substances into the atmosphere of your building when they burn. PVC can also cause major lead contamination problems in non-combustion conditions, simply by being installed and removed in your buildings.
