National Electric Code and Abandoned Cable

Abandoned Cable Removal Strategy I

::Initial Survey

Hire professional to survey your building to determine the extent of abandoned cabling. The professional should develop a report providing written narrative and digital photography that addresses an initial assessment of the volume, condition and extent of abandoned cabling. The professional should contact the AHJ to determine and report upon what NEC standard they are enforcing and what their position is on abandoned cabling removal.

::Specification and Bid Documentation Development

The professional should conduct a thorough inspection of the building and generate reporting and specifications that can be used to competitively bid the removal of identified abandoned cabling and labeling of cabling that may have future value. As an alternative, real estate owners can utilize a design/removal methodology (like design/build) to address this issue in their buildings.

::Removal/Abatement of Abandoned Cabling

The professional serves as an owner representative to oversee the removal/labeling process with the selected contractor. The results from this phase should include confirmation that the project was completed according to the plans and specifications (noting any exceptions) and confirmation of compliance with AHJ.
