National Electric Code and Abandoned Cable

Abandoned Cable Removal Strategy III

::Specify Acceptable Cable Materials

Owners and managers should require tenants and their contractors to install limited-combustible cable and limit CMP (Communications Multipurpose Plenum) plenum cable for all vertical and horizontal installations in their buildings. Limited-combustible cable does not contain the same level of toxins and lead as plenum-rated cable. Many manufacturers have lead-free cables that are NEC approved for use in the return air plenum.

::Fire Evacuation Planning

The most recent NFPA statistics available reveal that an office building fire occurs every 90 minutes in the United States (5,800 fires per year). Owners should ensure their building management team has an effective plan in place for evacuation of building occupants in the event of a fire. Knowledge of how to isolate HVAC systems to contain and purge smoke and fumes needs to be an integral part of this plan. This plan should exist and be practiced on a regularly defined basis.
